PHASES

  1. Project Framing (October - December 2013)

A KICK-OFF MEETING took place in Brussels on 4 October 2013 where the Advisory Board and the Steering Group defined the overall objective and scope of the project. After having assessed the policy relevance of a research on the state of play of integration-related issues and of policy-making processes, the project has been structured in the following way: a preliminary desk research, followed by an empirical in-depth analysis of specific key topics identified in the desk research. To carry out the two latter tasks, each Advisory Board member chose and coordinated a team of two to five researchers, also expert in their fields, who were assigned a range of topics to cover.

  2. Brainstorming: Planning the activities (January – February 2014)

In order for the research to be well-designed, it was of the utmost relevance to draw guidelines within which researchers had to orient their activities. The researchers and experts the project had resorted to have been involved in the definition of these guidelines in order to develop the research, and decided together the topics to be covered and analyzed in the research.

  3. Presenting, assessing, improving the project’s relevance (February – June 2014)

Once the project had been outlined, it had been essential to present it to different types of institutions in order to assess its relevance for policy-makers, so as to confer it the character of an action-oriented research. The project was thus presented to European Commission officials, the National Contact Points on Integration and the diverse stakeholders taking part in the European Forum Integration.

  4. Investigating: desk research and in-depth studies (July – October 2014)

Once the project soundly anchored into a scientific framework and a policy-relevance assessment, the investigation could start. Starting in July 2014, the members of the research teams, as set up by the Advisory Board, conducted a desk research and wrote a paper summarizing the current state of knowledge in their specific area of investigation. The Advisory Board members, together with their research teams were then in charge of conducting an empirical in-depth analysis, which lasted until October 2014 and was aimed at further exploring the main aspects of the process of integration and the governance of integration policies as they emerged from the desk research. Each team selected the topics requiring further investigation and chose the research methods best suited (interviews, case studies, statistics, etc.) to explore the designated field in their respective academic discipline (see the list of Research Papers)

  5. Presentation of the Final Report Executive Summary at METROPOLIS2014 (3-7 November 2014)

Taking stock of the findings, an executive summary shall be written and then presented at the Metropolis2014 International Conference, taking place in Milan from 3 to 7 November 2014. The executive summary shall be distributed on that occasion so as to initiate the dissemination of the research results.

  6. Migrant integration in the EU-2014: Final report (December 2014 – January 2015)

The Steering Group along with the Advisory Board drafted and finalized the project’s final report.

  7. Dissemination (February 2015)

The KING project’s definitive results and final report will be presented at the project closing conference, which is to take place in Barcelona in February 2015, and will be disseminated more widely thereafter.
